2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo MR
Could the spoiler get any bigger?
X: For one of the first times I was dying to see how my students would react when I pulled up to school in the 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR. I was certain that I would get a great deal of giggles and stares.
Boomer: It couldn’t have been as bad as when I was stopped at a red light on Tuesday, and a 16-year-old kid next to me asked me to show him my top………….speed.
X: Well, the Evolution MR does top off at 152 MPH, which is an easy thing to do with its turbo engine. I’m glad you didn’t show him any top off stuff (not a great sight for a sixteen year old). The engine is 2.0L14, 16-valve, 276@6500hp, and has a 286lb.-ft. of torque. That is one machine.
Boomer: Which is why I showed that little punk how aggressive the vehicle really was by going 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds. It is true that objects do appear smaller in the rearview mirror. I also understand how whiplash occurs.
X: Sounds like the date I had Friday night. He gave me whiplash asking me so many questions like if I like spring or fall weddings and he also wanted to know if I had picked a name for my first born child yet? I told him to slowdown just a bit, and I agree with you that objects do look much smaller in the rearview mirror (as you are speeding away).
Boomer: Hey, he sounds like a great guy - willing to marry you and give me grand babies right away. Invite him over the house… soon.
X: The likelihood of him and I having a second date is as promising as me spending $36,894.00 on the new 2006 Lancer Evolution MR. The 4-door, 6-speed manual transmission sedan is definitely overpriced for what the driver gets.
Boomer: All I got was extremely carsick. The Evolution MR is a rough ride for daily commutes, and I am on the road a lot going to meet clients. I can’t afford to show up queasy. The super-sized spoiler on the back was so big, I felt like any minute I would be airborne or that I should be racing at P.I.R.
X: I could have never raced at P.I.R. with the splitting headache the Evolution gave me. The rear seats were awfully tight and uncomfortable. The cabin was noisy, and there was no cruise control. I had to drive 40 miles north on I-17 without cruise control. It was awful.
Boomer: What were you doing traveling north? Did your date want to take you to look at wedding sites or new homes in the mountains?
X: Very funny. No, the 2006 Evolution MR has a new electronic active center differential (E – ACD) that I wanted to test. It claims to improve responsiveness to varying road conditions. The driver can select from pavement, snow or gravel settings. Since Phoenix isn’t known for its snow, I drove up north to find some since New York was too far east.
Boomer: So, any luck?
X: Well the Lancer sedan does get 18-city/24-highway mpg. And, it handled great when I drove on pavement and off the road into the gravel. There was no snow, but somehow I believe it would have done just fine based on the gravel test.
Boomer: You ought to be careful driving such a flashy car, honey. The Lancer Evolution MR has one of the highest insurance premiums, because it is sure to catch the eyes of both cops and criminals not to mention men with spoiler fixations.
X: Yes, but I wasn’t worried about hurting the car or attracting spoiler stalkers. The 2006 Evolution MR comes with a free maintenance plan, 10 year 100,000 mile power train, 5 year 60,000 mile new vehicle limited warranty, and 5 year unlimited mile roadside assistance.
Boomer: It also comes standard with Evo – specific Bilstein shock absorbers, dark gray BBS forged aluminum wheels, HID headlights, and specific aluminum and carbon fiber trim pieces. This car is so well made; it should be in an Olympic event. That car was a lot to handle.
X: Well, my students would agree with you. They told me I couldn’t handle all that the Evolution MR has to offer. I think they are right. However, they were very open about what they researched about the MR. They stated it had great acceleration, good brakes, smooth shifting, and simple and attractive control layout and design. That was true.
Boomer: You’re talking to teenagers with testosterone running through their veins, and they know everything, right?
X: I wish they did. That would make my job a great deal easier.
Boomer: Here, I’ll make it easy for you. The 2006 Lancer Evolution is also available in three trims. The RS model starts at $27, 929, the VIII starts at $30, 699, and the MR has an MSRP of $34, 699. After all, this is the 8th generation of the Evolution.
X: Did you know the definition of evolution is a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form?
Boomer: Always the English teacher, aren’t you? I agree with the definition that the Evolution is complex. You could use the word evolution to describe a lot of things.
X: True, like you going through menopause. That has been a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex…
Boomer: Remember, I knew you when you had acne, so I’d stop right there.
