Test Driving the 2007 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

2007 Volkswagon Beetle ConvertableBoomer: I figured the New VW Beetle would be just a throw back to the ‘60’s love bug of my generation. I was pleasantly surprised to see it still had the same “radical” look, but the inside was luxurious to the touch as well as quiet while driving, much unlike the bug of the sixties.

X: Radical? Well, since I wasn’t around in the ’60’s my test driving experience is with newer models. I liked the New Beetle for its interior, which gave me a serene feeling, cozy cubbies for accessories and functional reach to all the controls. The three cupholders are well placed and the two 12V outlets are perfect for ipods and even plugging in an electric guitar.

Boomer: Just when I thought texting while driving was a major problem.

X: How about that vase on the dash that you said I should put a flower in like your
Woodstock friends did. Personally, because I’m a teacher, I’d rather place a pen or pencil in the plastic container for practical purposes.

Boomer: Great! Now you’re thinking about writing while you’re driving too!

X: Don’t be ridiculous. I wouldn’t do that while driving. However, the VW is filled with plenty of safety features including four airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, panic alarm, brake pad wear indicator and integrated rollover protection designed for the convertible owner. I felt very secure knowing all of that.

Boomer: Safe it is. How about the dual vanity mirrors with lights to truly test if I can apply my lip liner while you’re driving? Then there is a home-link garage door opener integrated into the visor, blinkers built into the side view mirrors and a key fob which I think is just FOBulous.

X: I can’t believe you just said that. One of my favorite details was the digital record of the time and the outside temperature placed above the rearview mirror. I also want to mention how easy and fun it was to put the semi-automatic convertible top up and down.
It was a tad hot when we had the top down but when you spilled your water bottle on me it really cooled things off. Thank you!

Boomer: Sorry. I thought the color combination of the Harvest Moon Beige with the cream colored cloth roof was very rich and classy. I also liked the interior upper panel material laminate which was the same color as the outside of the car; rather than a wood grain like most vehicles. It really was spacious, I never felt like we were in a small car.

X: Nor did I, until we spent almost two full days together in a “love bug”. Even with that mom, the Beetle was fun, cute and mechanically sound. I can see how both generations would enjoy a car named after a bug.

Boomer: Or a British Rock group!
