2007 Saturn Sky
Fireworks in the SKY for Saturn
Boomer: It seemed appropriate that the color of the vehicle we test drove during the 4th of July was Chili Pepper Red.
X: However, it did not seem necessary that you wear the colors white and blue every time you got in the driver’s seat of the 2007 Saturn Sky.
Boomer: Well, excuse me for wanting to be patriotic. Speaking of the driver’s seat, although I wish I could sit a little higher, I noticed the sport seats in the new Saturn roadster were extremely comfortable. I also noticed they didn’t have a switch to adjust the height.
X: You wish the seat was a bit higher because you are short. I could see perfectly fine over the steering wheel.
Boomer: It wasn’t the steering wheel that I had problems with. There were some blind spots in the Sky, and I figured it was due to the low, bucket seats. I’m actually surprised you could fit your long legs in Saturn’s new addition for 2007.
X: It was difficult, but I managed. Nonetheless, I do agree with you regarding the seats. When we drove all the way to Tempe Town Lake for the fireworks celebration, I realized my back and legs felt great after maneuvering myself out of the car.
Boomer: Why would your back and legs hurt to begin with?
X: Well, Jack and I went hiking last Saturday at the Spur Cross Trailhead, which is over 20 miles roundtrip. I haven’t been able to walk much since.
Boomer: So, Jack is an outdoorsy, athletic type. When will you be seeing him again?
X: I am feeling much better now, thanks Mom. Good thing the Saturn Sky has power everything because I could barely lift my arm off the shifter where it seemed to fall so naturally.
Boomer: We aren’t still talking about Jack, are we? I had troubles finding the power door lock, but I did notice that once you turn the ignition off, the doors do unlock on the driver and passenger side.
X: The other feature on the Sky that wasn’t power was the manual, cloth convertible top. It seemed absurd to have to get out of the car during this July heat to jam the convertible into the trunk. However, it did make the fireworks show more exciting.
Boomer: I didn’t mind manually putting the top down, that’s the way it was in my day. I really enjoyed the musical performances at the Tempe Town Lake 4th of July bash, I just wish they would bring in groups like Herman and the Hermits and Paul Revere and the Raiders.
X: I’m sure they would love to but their probably all dead. You need to appreciate the XM satellite radio that we had playing in the Sky while we watched the fireworks.
Boomer: Yes, they played “Born in the U.S.A by Bruce Springsteen,” “America” by Neil Diamond, “God Bless America” and the “Star Spangled Banner.”
X: Wow that is quite an array of hip, new music for you. At least the safety in the 2007 Saturn Sky is stylish and modern. It has dual stage front airbags with passenger sensing system, tire sealant and inflator kit, and passkey III and theft deterrent. I am sure you felt secure when I was driving the Sky.
Boomer: I wasn’t worried too much because you weren’t able to drive too fast in the Sky. It only comes with a 2.4 liter, L4 engine, and has a 177 horsepower and 16 valves. However, the turbo is coming soon and that will be a whole different drive.
X: Great, but it was the 5-speed manual transmission that I liked. Also, the pedals in the Sky are designed for heel/toe driving, which allows the driver to fully realize the car’s performance abilities, especially when driving fast.
Boomer: Melanie, you better not have driven this roadster over the speed limit!
X: I didn’t, if the speed limit was 75 MPH. I only drove fast because I was sick of people checking out the car as if I, I mean it, were some piece of meat. The sky isn’t in all dealerships yet, so everyone was staring at it or me or both.
Boomer: What do you expect when you, I mean it, drive around with no top on? It’s a good looking vehicle, and the exterior and interior are flashy. In fact, the way the trunk opens, the opposite of most trunks, received attention as well. The convertible top unsnaps when you open the trunk… You know what? You really have to see it to understand how simple the process is.
X: Simple is the perfect word. The Sky has 18-inch alloy wheels and a polished aluminum exhaust outlet. Plus, we drove a Sky with the $750.00 premium trim package that includes leather seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel audio controls, metallic finish sill plates and stainless steel pedal covers.
Boomer: The car is such a great addition to the Saturn line of more practical vehicles. The gas mileage isn’t bad either. The Sky gets 20 city mpg and 28 highway mpg.
X: Don’t forget the price. The MSRP of the Saturn Sky we test drove was $25,030. It is very fairly priced in regards to its roadster competitors. The Nissan 350Z is priced at $27,650, the Chrysler Crossfire has an MSRP of $30,070, and the Honda S2000 out the door is $34,050.
Boomer: Sounds like something a teacher and athletic hiker might be able to afford and enjoy.
X: Mom, the only thing I would like to enjoy is some peace and quiet and no nagging about boyfriends or dating.
Boomer: That reminds me, your birthday is next week, what would you like?
X: Peace and quiet and no nagging about guys.
Boomer: Fine!
