Pros: Sharp Styling, Fabulous Performance and Handling, Roomy and Comfortable
Cons: Not everyone can afford it
Oh where to start with the 2006 M45 from Infiniti. I’d heard rumblings about this car but nothing prepared me for just how good this car really is.
The early version of the Infiniti M was a great performer but woefully lacking in styling. The all new 2006 model is built on the same rear-wheel-drive platform used for the G35 and the FX, but the M is more than six inches longer than the G, with a 2-inch longer wheelbase. The front-end shows a strong family resemblance to the G35 and the overall silhouette has a stylish yet edgy look. Infiniti designers describe the dash layout of the M being inspired by a piano keyboard, which I liked, with standard satin-finish rosewood trim. Infiniti says that the M45 is the most technically advanced vehicle yet produced.
The M offers a lane departure warning system, intelligent key with push-button starting, adaptive front lighting system, rear view monitor, bluetooth wireless connectivity, and intelligent all-wheel drive is available on the M35, and the Bose Studio Surround Sound System is absolutely wonderful.
The all-new M45 is offered in aluminum 335 horsepower V8, while the M35 is a V6-powered version. Both versions offer a sport package with 19-inch split, 5-spoke alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, and rear active steering. The M35x features the Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split, or ATTESA E-TS, all-wheel-drive system. Don’t you just love the alphabet soup?
Interestingly, the new M has a longer wheelbase than the full-size Q45, at 114.2 inches compared to 113 inches for the "Q." But the M is 8.2 inches shorter than the Q45. The short front-rear body overhangs give the M a much sportier look. A wide front and rear footprint gives the M a very athletic appearance.
The M is available with rear-wheel drive or an advanced all-wheel-drive system with a balanced front-rear driving feel and, depending on the trim level. There's also a Rear Active Steer system that steers the rear wheels slightly for better handling. It's not something one is cognizant of, but it makes the M feel extremely solid while maneuvering on the highway.
The EPA estimates for the V8 version show 17/23 using premium fuels, and this car got very close to those numbers which is very impressive for this big, powerful vehicle. The all-independent suspension provides a comfortable ride that is firm but supple for a nearly 2 ton vehicle. The brakes have an easily modulated pedal with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution for panic stops. The way this car hunkers down on hard stops is simply amazing.
As I mentioned earlier, the dashboard is laid out at a gentle angle which is where the "piano" comparison comes from, but it's neat and easier to reach and use. I like it's unique look. The dash itself is well laid out, with easy to read large analog gauges. The interior is very roomy, comfortably plush but not too soft making it a driver's car.
Options include audible warning of unintended lane departure, a navigation system, satellite radio, a cruise control system that maintains a set distance from a vehicle ahead and even a heated power reclining rear seat. There's also a rear DVD entertainment system to keep kids occupied.
The Infiniti division arrived on the scene with the Lexus some 15 years ago, but it never quite had the success Lexus or such automakers as BMW or Mercedes enjoyed. The M will without a doubt give Infiniti more punch and much long overdue respect. The old M was a stop-gap car to fill the slot between the G35 and Infiniti's flagship model, the Q45 sedan. The new M plays the same part but this bad boy is by no means a stop-gap model as is show by the success its enjoying so far and I'm sure will continue.
The good news for Infiniti is that the all-new M is a serious threat to such exhilarating sports sedans as the BMW 5-Series, Cadillac STS, Jaguar S-Type, Lexus GS Audi A6,and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. As you no doubt have surmised, I really liked this car and wish I could justify buying one so if you're in the market for a great all-around sports sedan, check out the M45 by Infiniti. If you don't like it, please let me know why okay?
