Mercedes Powerful, Sleek SL550

Bill -The 2009 SL-Class is the fifth-generation of this fabulous two-seat roadster which debuted in 1957. The test car was the SL550, a step up from the SL500 that went on sale in the spring of 2002 as a 2003 model, along with the high-performance SL55 AMG iteration. The SL600 joined the lineup for 2004 and the monstrous SL65 AMG was added for 2005.

Cathy - I like the 2009 remodeled front-end design which is new yet very familiar, with a wider grille that incorporates a single horizontal crossbar reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL. There are bulges added to the hood, and aggressive bi-xenon headlights. The SL also features new side mirrors with arrow-shaped turn signals, a rear air diffuser and trapezoidal exhaust tips.

Bill -The Mercedes receives a 7-speed automatic transmission which was very effective and smooth in delivering power to the wheels. And power this car has in spades with a very potent 382hp 5.5-liter V8 delivering a especially impressive 391 lb-ft of torque that allows this hefty 2 ton plus machine move down the highway with ease.

Cathy - As I sat behind the new 3-spoke steering wheel and restyled instrument cluster with red needles, I knew I was in a very special car. The SL's seats offer 12-way power adjustments; which I need for my 5’2 frame, plus adjustable lumbar support, 3-position memory and two levels of heat usually not needed in Phoenix; but still a great feature.

Bill - It is a roadster and when it comes to putting the top down, the SL-Class is the fastest hardtop convertible around, going from coupe to roadster in just 16 seconds. One minor quibble though, the mechanicals of the retractable top are visible with the top up, but that’s hardly enough reason to keep from buying this stunning motor car.

Cathy - This car is really all about serious driving and it is a pure pleasure so whether you’re going around the corner or cross country, check out the new SL-550. The $100,000 price range on the SL550 might scare you, but there’s no doubt that this is one of the cars you want to own and then check off your bucket list.
