There are benchmark vehicles that everyone knows about even if they’ve never owned one. Land Rover is one. Now when the manufacturer decides to build a “more affordable” iteration of a benchmark vehicle, the results can be iffy, and at times not so popular ala the Mercedes C230 Coupe and to a degree the Volvo S and V 40’s. The LR3 doesn’t have that problem as it’s a very nice compromise between the Range Rover Sport and the entry level LR2. At a base price under $46,000 it’s not a bad deal at all.
The LR3 replaced the Discovery for 2005 and is designed to carry on the legendary off-road capability expected from a Land Rover. The LR3 is an all-new vehicle with a distinctive Land Rover look, including a front end treatment similar to the flagship Range Rover, short overhangs, and a bold overall appearance; much better looking than the LR2 in my humble opinion. The interior will accommodate up to seven people and is designed to offer more passenger room and comfort than its predecessor.
The tester came with the HSE Luxury Package for $6750 and 3rd row seating for another $1150 and when you add charges for a full size spare and shipping the price came to $55,500. My test car was powered by a 4.4 liter 300hp V8 with 315lb-ft of torque so this is one frisky SUV. The LR3 transmission is a 6-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic with normal, sport, and manual shift modes. It has a permanent 4-wheel drive with Traction Control and a 2-speed electronic transfer case.
I don’t know how many people take their SUV’s off-road and that goes for the LR3 so while the reputation is toughness, this SUV is a pretty mild mannered road car and offers a lot of comfort and room. It isn’t easy on fuel with EPA rating it at 12 in the city and only 17 on the highway so you have to keep that in mind but if you’re thinking about stepping up to the Land Rover line, the LR3 is a good way to go.
