The Legacy started out and continues to be Subaru’s luxury sedan. But Subaru has added a high-performance Spec B grade to appeal to driving enthusiasts. A turbocharged horizontal four-cylinder engine provides the punch for this pocket rocket and the Spec B is the only Legacy available with a six-speed manual transmission.
An interesting software program called SI Drive modifies throttle response to match the driver’s style and the terrain. The intelligent setting has the softest throttle response for driving in wet weather or to conserve fuel, while the sport sharp mode maximizes torque. The sport setting takes the middle position. All that means is that this car is really a lot of fun to drive, and much better looking than the predecessor.
The Spec B can accommodate four adults in relative comfort with a fair amount of legroom in the back. However, there is a tunnel through the floor and the center console bin making sitting in the middle not a good idea. Ergonomically the center stack works well for both driver and passenger and a DVD-based navigation system is standard on the Legacy Spec B, as is an upscale Harmon Kardon audio system.
Dual temperature controls allow both front passengers to find a comfortable temperature and there are plenty of cupholders and storage nooks inside. While not huge, the Legacy’s trunk is large enough for golf bags, luggage and groceries. A storage area under the cargo floor has small compartments for stashing valuables out of sight. Optional cargo nets add smaller spaces to either side of the trunk for grocery bags.
Bottom line, if looks have been the thing keeping you from driving a Subaru, it’s time to look again. The Legacy is a very sophisticated looking car and the Spec B adds a pretty solid fun factor to your daily drive. Check one out; I think you’ll be as surprised as I was.
