2010 Suzuki Kizashi
By: Cathy Droz
Just when I thought I could say Suzuki with my New York accent without distorting the name, the manufacturer of such models as the Grand Vitara, Equator and SX4 series come out with a Kizashi. This is not to be confused with the healthy breakfast cereal Kashi. If you want to sound really multilingual; tell someone to go and test drive a ( Sah- Zoo- Key, Kee-zah-shee.) The word Kizashi means “something great is coming,” and I do believe that is an appropriate definition for the future of Suzuki.
Bill and I couldn’t believe just how pulled together and European looking this sedan from Japan was both inside and out. They took a chance entering the competitive family-sedan segment; but why not, the top three auto manufacturers were still working on theirs.
There were so many great things about the Kizashi especially its all wheel drive. Even thought only one engine size is available at this time; it seemed just fine for any driving I had to do around town or freeway trips to visit family. Presently the 2.4 liter, l80—horsepower, four-cylinder with a choice of six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission is all that is available. This was powerful enough for me but I know Bill is hoping for a V-6 or a turbocharger added for 2011.
The interior of the Kizashi was very nice. I don’t want to say I was surprised, but there was attention to detail with soft easy to touch materials. It seemed like the years of experience in motorcycles ATV’s and marine manufacturing was utilized in this car. I felt comfortable in both the driver and passenger seat and if a blind “test-drive test” was conducted, like Pepsi and Coke, I would have a difficult time telling you what brand or model car I was sitting in.
The handling and over all ride of this “something great is coming” machine showed me that Suzuki “gets it”. I took a few sharp corners that I undercompensated for during my week test drive and fortunately the Kisashi had a great response to my sloppy turning. The ride was firm with the sensation of a sporty suspension. I could have done with a loftier feel but Bill of course liked the firmness.
The back seat and cargo area are perfect for a small family as it was easy to get the car seats set up for the grandkids and plenty of room in the trunk for all the paraphernalia involved with transporting kids, pets, sports equipment, business accessories and grocery bags.
I would recommend you test drive this vehicle before you disregard this review. Don’t judge this car by the difficulty involved in pronouncing its name. After all, Zervakos and Droz aren’t exactly easy to roll off the tongue.
