Gold Beach Oregon, A River Rogue’s Paradise
By Cathy Burford
Do yourself a favor and plan a trip to the Four Seasons RV Park www.fourseasonsrv.com in Gold Beach, Oregon. This park is ideal for RV enthusiasts who yearn to step back in time and relax at a family-run resort. Many guests return here year after year, which is a testament to the laid-back atmosphere. If you are tired of concrete pads and treeless parks, you will love it here! Located on the banks of the Rogue River, just 6.5 miles from Hwy 101 in the town of Gold Beach OR, this is truly a full-service RV resort. It includes the standard amenities; laundry, store, park models for rent, tent sites, horseshoe pits, but it also includes a private dock and boat launch, booking services to local attractions, and fishing licenses. Stop by the office to visit with Dawna, the owner, and have a look at the pictures when the river is at its highest. Gives you an appreciation for what the resort goes through to protect their docks every year.
There is much to do besides just relaxing at this park, but the two most famous pastimes are: jet boat tours and fishing charters. Our travel group did both. The 2 major jet operators are; Jerry’s Rogue Jets www.jerrysroguejets.com and Rogue River Mail Boat Hydro Jets www.mailboat.com. Visit their websites to see the thrills that lie in store on these tours. The stewardship of the river is taken seriously, and the rules of the river are strictly enforced. There are only a certain number of boat trips allowed, both commercial and private. The jet boats idle by all other craft, whether they are beached or motoring. As a result of this protection, we were able to view; bald eagles, an otter family, river turtles, a black bear, osprey, vultures, and wild turkeys. Our trip via Jerry’s Rogue Jets began when they picked us up right at the Four Seasons dock in the ‘big’ boat for the 104 mile, 7 ½ hour tour. Remember to dress in layers and hold on to your hats! In the summer months you can expect a temperature range of 30 degrees during your tour if you are taking the long trip, as we did. We boarded a smaller boat after a stop at the Singing Springs Resort for the second portion of the river trip. You may be a bit exhausted after a full day on the river, but I guarantee you will have great memories, and outstanding pictures.
Also, don’t miss out on the chance to try your hand at salmon fishing with one of the many charter captains. The resort can make arrangements for that as well. Our guys were ‘hooked-up’ with Mel Guido, who guided them to what turned out to be the ONLY catch of the morning- a 28 pound Chinook Salmon. Our angler, Gil, had his 15 minutes of fame as captain Mel’s cellphone was soon ringing off the hook, with the other captains wanting to know what bait he was using. While the bait may have been important, in my opinion, you just can’t go wrong with a Portuguese boat captain. Needless to say, we had a fabulous salmon dinner that night. You might want to do a little more research than we did when you plan your trip-make sure it is Dungeness Crab Season - we missed it by only 2 weeks. Tragic…
Nearby attractions to the Four Seasons; the quaint town of Gold Beach, the magnificent Pacific Ocean, Tu Tu Tun resort right next door if you want an elegant dinner out, The Wedderburn Store for amazing Oregonberry pies (in fact, everything baked there is fabulous).
For general information to plan your trip go to www.visittheoregoncoast.com. One could easily spend months exploring the Oregon Coast, but the Four Seasons is a fantastic place to start!
