Our Battle with the Little Bighorn - It's a Tie!
Abort, abort,abort...we're having a slight change in itinerary due to the fact that our fridge/freezer died! Will have to catch all the fun stuff in WY and SD on the way back, as we are loaded up with dry ice and speeding to Elkhart, IN to get our coil replaced in the unit. Why Elkhart, you may be asking? Well, it turns out that there is only one coil in the country that fits this particular fridge- not one TYPE, 1 period, and it's in Elkhart, along with the factory authorized service guy. The good thing is that Elkhart is only about 1 1/2 hours from the kiddos in Ft. Wayne, so we'll just have a little more time with them. We drove through the East part of Yellowstone on our way to Cody, WY, so we were able to see some new places in the park. Yellowstone Lake is HUGE, and this area of the park is uncrowded. Passed through Sylvan Pass on the east exit, where there was still quite a bit of snow on the ground.
We were almost to Cody, near the little burg of Wapiti (translation=elk) when we came upon some young bighorn sheep. The last one hesitated, doubled back, then must have figured 'Heck, I can make it' and ran in front of the motorhome. We've all experienced that sick feeling when you KNOW you are going to hit an animal, but this was no squirrel!
We clipped him on the hindquarters and he flipped 'ass over teakettle' (Wm's description, although I must admit, I've never really understood that expression), then he jumped up and ambled off on all fours, limping. We would like to think that he will be fine, but I'm sure he's been cussing us out in 'sheepspeak' for a couple of days now. The motorhome doesn't even have a scratch on it, but we feel so badly for the little dude...Have attached a pic of his buddies who appeared to be freaked out as well.
Stopped for the night in Cody WY. I have always been curious about Cody, wondering what would possess my cousin to pack up a U-Haul and move there without knowing a soul. I think I understand now, but you have to remember that we're seeing it in the summer, its optimum time of year. One winter here must have been enough for the 'cuz, she now lives in Florida ...
We are staying at the Ponderosa Campground, conveniently located right in the heart of Cody. Will make that our base when we return to learn all there is to know about Buffalo Bill.
